Introduction

The multidisciplinary BEM workshop in Maresias (February 2014) – BEM I – was the first meeting of international scientists interested in drilling the Brazilian Equatorial Margin. Outstanding questions highly relevant to the IODP Initial Science plan include understanding the role of transform faults/fracture zones in the evolution of continental margins, and unraveling the Cenozoic paleoclimate and paleoceanographic record in the inter-tropical latitudes.

These two themes, directly linked to drilling sites along the eastern portion of BEM, were subsequently developed to the submission of two successful pre-proposals in October 2014:

Following the positive reviews of the panel, the goal of this BEM-II workshop is to move forward with organising, coordinating and writing the two full proposals for drilling in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin.
